Irrigation Filtration Retrofit Case of a Potato Planting Base in Inner Mongolia

The original irrigation system of a potato planting base in Inner Mongolia suffered frequent clogging due to water quality issues. By installing a combined filtration system of sand filters and disc filters, stable water quality that meets standards was achieved, and the operating efficiency of the drip irrigation system was significantly improved.

Inner Mongolia is one of the major potato producing areas in China, and drip irrigation technology is widely used in large-scale planting bases. The original irrigation system of a potato planting base used surface water with high content of sediment and organic matter. After the drip irrigation system had been operating for a period of time, problems such as frequent emitter clogging and uneven water output occurred, requiring repeated flushing and maintenance, which seriously affected irrigation efficiency. In response to the water quality conditions of the base, the technical team formulated a combined filtration retrofit scheme of sand filter + disc filter: the sand filter performs deep filtration of surface water to remove sediment, algae and organic matter; the disc filter performs fine filtration to ensure that the effluent meets drip irrigation requirements. The system is equipped with automatic backwash control, which can perform automatic cleaning according to the pressure difference, reducing manual maintenance. After the retrofit was completed, the water output of the irrigation system was stable and uniform, the emitter clogging problem was basically eliminated, the growth and yield of potatoes were significantly improved, and the irrigation maintenance cost of the base was greatly reduced. This case shows that retrofitting the filtration head of the original irrigation system is an effective measure with low investment and quick results to improve system operating efficiency and extend equipment service life.
