Introduction
Agriculture is one of the vital sectors in Yemen that contributes to national food security. With growing water demand and increasingly limited water resources, the adoption of modern irrigation systems has become an urgent necessity rather than an option. In this article, we present a real-world case of the traditional Al-Hajariya Dams located in Taiz, and how local farmers successfully applied state-of-the-art irrigation technologies to achieve significant water savings and increased productivity.
Current Status of Agriculture in Yemen
Recent statistics indicate that Yemen relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture and traditional irrigation methods, leading to substantial waste of water resources. The local Ministry of Agriculture estimates that water loss in irrigation reaches up to 40% in some areas. In Sana'a, farmers face multiple challenges, most notably rainfall scarcity, high summer temperatures, and rising salinity of groundwater.
Field Case: The Traditional Al-Hajariya Dams
Our team conducted a field visit to the traditional Al-Hajariya Dams, which span an area of 453 acres in the Taiz region. The farm specializes in growing palm trees and vegetables, and previously suffered from numerous problems: high water consumption, low productivity, widespread fungal diseases, and high labor costs.
Implemented Solution
After a comprehensive assessment of the situation, the farm management decided to deploy a compact disc filter system: the optimal solution for irrigation water purification. The upgrade process included three phases: first, assessment of water resources and analysis of water samples; second, engineering design of the irrigation network with consideration for pressure and uniform distribution; third, implementation and commissioning with the participation of a specialized technical team.
After trial operation, it was observed that water consumption decreased by 46%, while productivity increased by 34%. Labor costs also dropped by 48% due to the automated operation of the system.
Economic Analysis
The total investment in this project amounted to approximately 203335 dirham/rial. Based on the achieved savings, the capital payback period is estimated at around 4 years, which is an excellent rate compared to other agricultural projects.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
During project implementation, the team encountered several challenges: highly saline water quality, training workers on the automated system, and availability of spare parts. We recommend that farmers start with a small-scale trial, select high-quality equipment, consult experts, and take advantage of government support.
Recommendations
Based on this experience, we recommend the following for farmers in Yemen: Start with a small trial on a section of your farm, choose high-quality equipment, engage a specialized irrigation engineer, take advantage of government support that covers up to 50% of costs, and maintain records of water consumption and production.
Future of Agriculture
Experts predict that Yemen will witness a major transformation in the irrigation sector in the coming years, driven by rising water prices, growing water conservation awareness, entry of global technology companies, and expansion of agricultural land in desert areas.

The case of the traditional Al-Hajariya Dams in Taiz proves that transitioning to modern irrigation systems is not merely a technical choice, but a successful investment. With 46% water savings and a 34% increase in production, it is clear that investing in irrigation infrastructure is one of the best decisions for farmers in Yemen.
