Agriculture is a critical sector in Jordan that contributes to national food security. As water demand rises and water resources become increasingly scarce, adopting modern irrigation systems has become an urgent necessity rather than an optional choice. In this article, we present a real-world case of Dead Sea Farms located in the Jordan Valley, and how local farmers successfully applied state-of-the-art irrigation technologies to achieve substantial water savings and higher productivity.

Current State of Agriculture in Jordan

Recent statistics show that Jordan relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture and traditional irrigation methods, leading to significant waste of water resources. The local Ministry of Agriculture estimates that water loss in irrigation can reach 40% in some regions. In Amman, farmers face multiple challenges, most notably scarce rainfall, high summer temperatures, and rising salinity of groundwater.

Field Case: Dead Sea Farms

Our team conducted a field visit to Dead Sea Farms, which spans 367 acres in the Jordan Valley region. The farm specializes in growing date palms and vegetables, and previously suffered from a range of issues: high water consumption, low productivity, widespread fungal diseases, and high labor costs.

Implemented Solution

After a comprehensive assessment of the site conditions, the farm management decided to implement a drip irrigation system (compared against sprinkler irrigation to determine the optimal option). The upgrade project was carried out in three phases: first, water resource assessment and water sample analysis; second, engineering design of the irrigation network, with full consideration of pressure requirements and uniform water distribution; third, construction and commissioning with the support of a specialized technical team.

After trial operation, water consumption was found to drop by 56%, while productivity increased by 28%. Labor costs also decreased by 48% thanks to the automated operation of the system.

Economic Analysis

The total investment in this project was approximately 379178 AED/SAR. Based on the achieved savings, the capital payback period is estimated to be around 2 years, which is an excellent return compared to other agricultural projects.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

During project implementation, the team encountered several challenges: high salinity of water sources, training workers to operate the automated system, and availability of spare parts. We recommend that farmers start with a small-scale trial, select high-quality equipment, consult experts, and take advantage of government support programs.

Based on this experience, we offer the following recommendations for farmers in Jordan: Start with a small-scale trial on a section of your farm, choose high-quality equipment, work with a specialized irrigation engineer, take advantage of government support that covers up to 50% of costs, and keep records of water consumption and crop yield.

Experts forecast that Jordan will see a major transformation in its irrigation sector in the coming years, driven by rising water prices, growing public awareness of water conservation, entry of global technology companies, and expansion of agricultural land in desert areas.
